Biorock technology is an innovative process originally invented in 1976 to produce natural building materials in the sea. It has been successfully applied to grow coral reefs and other marine ecosystems (seagrass, salt marsh, mangrove, oyster reefs) to survive and recover. It is also used for fish and shellfish mariculture and growing limestone breakwaters to protect islands from erosion and rising sea levels.
