Early Buddhist art was largely aniconic: the Buddha was represented through symbols rather than a human image. An empty seat/vajrasana represents the Buddha's meditation/enlightenment at the Bodhi tree. The First Sermon is represented by the Dharmachakra, Mahaparinibbana by the stupa, and Mahabhinishkramana by the riderless horse.
